I seem to be in a state of denial that the year 2016 is over. I still have so much left on my list of things I had hoped to accomplish. There's so much left undone. So many moments I didn't savor. So many projects I didn't finish. So many things I didn't photograph. There are so many stories I still haven written down. I'm not sure where the time went nor what I have left to show for it. I've suffered more loss this year than I have even had time to wrap my mind around. I've given up so much. My sweet little orphaned baby alpaca died yesterday and as I sat next to his little lifeless body I felt more grief and more failure than I could hardly stand. With my heavy heart I picked him up and carried him to the house. I carefully sheared his fleece from his little lifeless body struggling to breathe and in such disbelief. I laid him to rest and I just still cannot believe that he's gone and I don't understand why. Perhaps my view of 2016 is just heavy laden with loss after loss. I wish that I could rewrite the story. I thought I would share these two sweet faces with you. My twin lambs and the very first ones I ever had to pull. I'll never forget that day my sweet Opal needed me or how amazing it was to be there with her. I was so scared of failing her. When I finally had the twins delivered I remember feeling so much love for these tiny fragile creatures with their smiling faces and heart shaped noses. It is one of the greatest joys that comes with the deepest aches this shepherdess life. Jolene and The gardener is what we named Opals twins. This was 5 years ago. Opal is still here and she's always been my favorite. Her son The Gardener is still here. The loss of Jolene is one of the events that compelled me to get Spartan and Roman AKA the rough toughs and #coyotesnackers ❤ I'm not sure what 2017 will hold but my prayer is that it's not so relentless on this shepherdess' heart. I will be the first to tell you that I am absolutely a perfectly imperfect mother. This week my priorities have been off. My baby turned 16 on the 26th of December and I think that I am in denial about how quickly the years are racing past me. When I look at my Autumn Sky and I see this beautiful young woman whose beauty is far deeper than that on the surface I am amazed. Ever since she entered this world {much quieter and easier than her big sister} She's always been so easy. She's always managed to fit perfectly everywhere. {don't get me wrong we have had a few seasons of crazy town, Autumn you know what I'm talking about 😜} She has the strongest back and arms that can out work grown mean as well as most teenage boys. She has an integrity and passion unmatched by most. She has the biggest heart and would give away everything she owns to help someone she loves. Her depth and loyalty leave her heart broken more often than not which is the hardest thing for people who love so much and care too deep. She is one of the most amazing humans you will ever meet and if you are lucky enough that she calls you friend you're walking amongst the privileged few. My beautiful Sky, I'm humbled and grateful that when God searched the earth He smiled at me and trusted me with your life. I Love you fiercely everyday even in the days you feel like I'm far away or too busy. {Perspective: a true understanding of the relative of importance of things.} perception is one of my favorite concepts in life. It's so interesting how two or more people can look at a thing, or situation and draw out their own percepts and conclusions so very differently. When perception is compared to reality one can say that true or not our perceptions are our realities. It's my favorite thing to remember that sometimes in order to gain a fresh perspective it's necessary to take a few steps back and re-evaluate. The last three days at the farm have been wonderful and this perspective is one I've not had the privilege of seeing until now. Loss is by far the most difficult part of farm life for me. It's not the hours of hard work or the feeding or vaccinations. It's not the late nights or the loads of bottles to the barn. It's not the left open gates and the retrieving of wandering livestock. It's the loss. It's the despite all your efforts and care. Despite the tending. It's the end when life is over and you're so discouraged because it's just over. I will miss you Cherry, every single day. I'll never forget the first day you came to the farm in your small deer like stature. I'll never forget the bonding in each bottle I fed you. I'll never forget last summer when you hurt your leg. "Spectacular achievement is always preceded by unspectacular preparation." I have found this to be true on so many levels in my own life. Often times outsiders looking in will only see achievements and not the pieces of ourselves we give up to have those achievements. Today I am thankful for all of you that spend hours toiling in the hard parts, in the unspectacular parts, pouring yourselves out in preparation for more. To the behind the scenes workers who are rarely seen or recognized. Here's to the hours in the kitchen, the hours with your babes, to the hours in the fields, to the hours in the office, to the hours on the phone, to the hours corresponding, to the hours building, planning, doing, praying, yearning. To all your unaccounted for hours that slip away so quickly. I'm thankful for you. You know that whole joy comes in the morning gig? It's totally a thing. One of the most profound lessons this last 6 years of #farmlife has been the literal roller coaster of not just the seasons but day to day. So quickly it can turn from peaceful serenity to a high stressor of your 3 year old jersey you got when she was a day old and raised on a bottle is now sunk in the mud and you've dug in the mud behind her and your trying to shove her out and she just wants to keep turning her head back and resting it against your face and neck because she's so happy that moms finally here..I'm happy to report that this morning Lemon is doing great and she greeted me with her sweet jersey girl kisses❤️ and I'm such a #proudmoocowmomma this morning because my #peach gave birth to this beautiful healthy bull calf!
